Stefano Harney: Affordances and Insubordination

The Department of VISUAL CULTURE is pleased to welcome STEFANO HARNEY for a four-part seminar series open to all.

The second seminar will take place on Thursday, 20.04.2023, 18:00 in seminar room AC0440 (TUW, Main Campus, staircase 10, 4th floor). The seminars build upon each other but can be attended individually as well.

AFFORDANCES AND INSUBORDINATION

This first seminar in the Spring series will focus on the decolonization of the eight senses and the kind of study that can make affordances central to our practice. Affordances as an idea was developed by JJ Gibson, a social psychologist of sorts. But as a practice it is yet to be explored outside of certain areas of technological fields. An exception is in the work of Brian Massumi and Erin Manning. This discussion of affordances begins with the historical damage done by theories of interiority especially in their gendered and racialized foundations as explored by Denise Ferreira da Silva. This discussion is presented as a report from the field of ongoing collaborative work with the performance artist Valentina Desideri.
