THE IN/VISIBLE CITY

Architecture – or the human presence in space – operates on multiple levels simultaneously: it organises functional uses, communicates symbolic meanings, shapes social relationships, has environmental consequences, and so on. Only in the rarest of cases do these various levels of action exist in harmonious balance. More often than not, the associated contradictions and interferences lead to tensions and conflicts. Yet it is precisely these inherent tensions that can generate the impetus for new perspectives, for a broader understanding and, consequently, for change.

In the course ‘Urban Visual Culture’, under the annual theme ‘Spectral Visualities’, we aim to explore the growing influence of artificial intelligence on the design of urban spaces, with a view to gaining a nuanced understanding of how these different levels of architectural practice interact. Artificial intelligence influences our urban lives in a multitude of ways – some of which are clearly recognisable, whilst others operate in subtle and often barely perceptible ways. In order to capture this full spectrum, case studies are carried out in small groups and documented, analysed and presented using textual and visual components. Particular attention is paid to the cultural narratives surrounding artificial intelligence in the city, which accompany and enable these changes.
