ausstellung: beta.city – game engines as tools for speculative urbanism and architecture
The Department of Visual Culture is pleased to present BETA.CITY, the final exhibition of the Artistic Project Visual Culture 2025, on view at Grossraum Gallery, Vienna.
Developed within the Artistic Project course at the Department of Visual Culture, Faculty of Architecture, Vienna University of Technology, the exhibited works explore the intersections of gaming, architecture, and digital culture. Through speculative game environments and virtual spaces, the student projects examine contemporary conditions shaped by technofeudalism, data regimes, and platform urbanism. In response to the growing influence of AI and data-driven technologies, the works reclaim virtual space as a site for artistic experimentation, proposing alternative narratives, architectures, and forms of collective imagination.
The exhibition opened on Thursday, 25 June, with an afternoon of presentations and discussion. As visitors engaged with the projects firsthand, the event naturally evolved into a shared gaming session, transforming the presentations into a collective exploration of the speculative worlds created by the students.
