Other Markets: The global struggle of informal trading places

A.M. Architekturmuseum der TUM

From a global perspective, around half of all economic activity today is considered “informal”. Spaces, where goods and services are offered in an uncontrolled environment play an important role in this context. Besides creating a temporary framework for trade beyond established norm and laws, such informal markets are also a steering instrument in the development of a new understanding of entrepreneurial creativity and economic self-organization. The lecture touches on a range of issues, from markets in the survival economy to the hipster markets of so-called creative megacities, offering insight into current urban processes on a global scale, where very different interest groups are seeking “Other Markets”.
