PLATFORM AUSTRIA

We are pleased to announce that the directors of the Centre for Global Architecture, PETER MÖRTENBÖCK and HELGE MOOSHAMMER, have been appointed as curators of the Austrian pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2021. Focusing on “platform urbanism”, the pavilion will be designed in collaboration with Vienna based architecture collective mostlikely.

The rise of “platforms” to the defining form of social and economic interaction in the 21st century is not just a matter of technological progress. As we are slowly getting used to the record breaking operations of digital platforms on international financial markets, their field of influence expands into many other areas: politics, education and healthcare, but also the design of new work environments and the construction of entirely new cities.

‘Platform Urbanism’ describes the encroachment of disruptive technologies onto urban space. These changes are not driven by technology alone, but by an interplay of technological innovation with social and cultural desires. There seems to be a connection between the slogans of today’s platforms and the demands of countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s, one that we would like to explore with our curatorial programme for the Austrian Pavilion.” – PETER MÖRTENBÖCK and HELGE MOOSHAMMER
