APPLIED CULTURAL THEORY

THE CITY IS /ALWAYS, ALREADY/ STRUCTURED LIKE A LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL

The title of this project is a provocation. The intention is to prompt us to reflect on three dimensions of the current AI debate. First, to focus our attention on a group of bleeding edge technologies — Large Language Models — to investigate what they are and how they work. Second, to consider the impacts LLMs are already having on the visualisation, modelling and realisation of speculative real estate projects in Vienna as well as other cities around the world. Finally, to refresh our memory about a much older debate on the relationship between the systems of language, desire and capital that were all said to unconsciously structure our relationship to ourselves, to each other and the environment.

Through a set of seminars and workshops, combining lectures, discussions, a city walk, and screenings of films by Chantal Akerman and Black Audio Film Collective, we will address these questions with the aim of generating a public discussion with the following prompt: is the city, like the unconscious, structured like a language?
