IS IT REALLY LOVE, OR IS IT JUST UNPAID WORK? SOCIAL REPRODUCTION THEORY IN CONVERSATION WITH PLATFORM URBANISM.
This session will critically examine how digital platforms benefit from various forms of invisibilised and/or unpaid labour. This will be contextualised and explored through the lens of social reproduction theory, an elaboration of Marxist-Feminism, which interrogates the various forms of work that propagate capitalism beyond that of waged labour alone. Using the Women’s Strike and contemporary art practices as sites of critical intervention, we will consider how platforms engage with the exploitative practices which long precede their inception(s).
‘POROUS, PENETRATING, AND PENETRABLE’: PLATFORMS AS THE QUEERING OF HETERO-NORMATIVE SPACE(S)
Might platforms and their iterating manifestations have the potential to radically alter normative categories of gender, sexuality and identity? Or do they simply re-affirm essentialist categories through hetero-normative and gender-assuming algorithms? This session will delve in queer platform studies, Xenofeminism and cyborgfeminism to consider how platforms could inform a re-engineer how our bodies exist in the world.
BLACK CANVAS POLITICS, RADIAL RE-IMAGININGS, AND EXISTING ON THE ‘EDGE’: PLATFORMS AS RE-AFFIRMED COLONIAL PRACTICE OR ANTI-COLONIAL INTERVENTION.
This session will examine the presence of platforms on colonised countries, including, but not limited to, Palestine and Puerto Rico. We will examine emancipatory political movements and socially engaged artistic practices which have utilised a platform model as site(s) of anti-colonial intervention, while considering how platforms may re-affirm these very colonial regimes.
